Israeli High Court Upholds Prohibition on Family Visits for Gazans Held in Israeli Prisons: Addameer Contends Practice Violates International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law
This briefing examines the legality of Israel‘s decision in June 2007, upheld by the Israeli High Court of Justice in December 2009, to ban all prisoners from the Gaza Strip held in Israeli prisons from receiving family visits. Addameer contends that this decision contravenes international law protecting detainees’ rights to family visits and demands that Israel and, in particular, the Israeli Prison Service (IPS), allow family visits and phone communication to Gazan prisoners in accord with its legal obligations.
