The administrative detention of Palestinian journalist Omar Nazzal has been limited to one and a half month during his confirmation hearing, which was held yesterday 22 November 2016. Mr. Nazzal is expected to be released on 24 December 2016. Occupation forces arrested the journalist Omar Nazzal, a member of the General Secretariat of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, and president of the Democratic Journalists Union on 23 April 2016, from the Allenby Bridge while en route to participation in the European Federation of Journalists General Meeting.

The administrative detention of Palestinian journalist Omar Nazzal was renewed for an additional three months for the second time today, Monday 21 November 2016. An administrative detention order was initially issued on 02 May 2016 against Mr. Nazzal, which was set to end on 22 August 2016, but was renewed for an additional three months. On 17 November 2016, Addameer director Sahar Francis addressed the European Parliament on the issue of Palestinian child prisoners and detainees. The talk specifically focused on the issue of the increasing use of administrative detention, detention without charge or trial. Baha'a Najjar, 21, from Hebron has been rearrested one week following his release. He was arrested on 4 November 2015 and placed under administrative detention in Ofer prison and was released on 2 November 2016. After spending a year under administrative detention, he was rearrested on 9 November 2016. This constitutes an arbitrary detention, where detainees get their administrative detention order renewed moments before their scheduled release (e.g. Shaher Al-Rai) or they are rearrested shortly following their release.

Israa’ Ja’abees has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. The 31-year-old of Jabal Mukaber, currently held in HaSharon prison suffers from medical negligence and lack of sufficient treatment. She was arrested after her car broke down near Al-Zayem military checkpoint on 10 October 2015, where her airbag exploded causing a fire that led to her severe burns and injuries. 14-year-old Ahmad Manasrah was sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder. Two other Palestinian children, 15-year-old Monther Abu Mayalah and 16-year-old Mohammad Taha were also sentenced in the Jerusalem District Court today for 11 years in prison each, and 50,000 NIS compensation.

After Addameer’s submitted an appeal to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, the latter has declared that Israel’s imprisonment of a Palestinian child without charge or trial constitutes arbitrary detention. The Israeli Military Court of Appeals has rejected an appeal submitted by Addameer against the extension of interrogation of Mr. Salah Khawaja, who was arrested on Wednesday 26 October 2016. Israeli Forces raided the house of Mr. Salah Khawaja, located in central Ramallah, and caused destruction in the property, after which Mr. Khawaja was arrested and taken into military custody. During the raid, Israeli Forces entered into the neighborhood and sprayed tear gas that caused suffocation among different families.
