Addameer Releases a Paper Titled: "Detention and Transitional Prisons: A Station for Torture and Ill-Treatment of Palestinian Prisoners and Detainees"

Addameer has issued a paper aimed at reviewing and documenting the tragic reality inside Israeli detention centers and "transitional" prisons where Palestinians are held. The paper highlights the degrading and inhumane treatment that detainees endure during their detention, the deprivation of their basic living rights, the absence of legal safeguards, and the necessity of raising public awareness about monitoring and documenting violations, as well as holding those responsible accountable to ensure the rights of detainees.

The report also sheds light on the ongoing violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by the occupation, reflecting a blatant disregard for moral and humanitarian values. It provides an overview of the procedures that prisoners go through and the conditions they experience in these detention centers and crossings, focusing on the period between 2019 and mid-2024. Additionally, it examines the repressive policies that the occupation has intensified against prisoners following October 7.

The paper primarily relies on information gathered from prison visits and interviews conducted by Addameer’s team, given the limited availability of legal data on detention centers, which the Israeli authorities deliberately withhold and do not disclose. Additionally, access to these centers is restricted to a select group of lawyers, as part of the occupation's efforts to isolate detainees, cut them off from the outside world, and conceal the crimes committed against them.
